I hear you jazzbo, and really that's all I was saying... the offense will be fine without Shockey, and it's not like Miller/Johnson are useless. They have some pros of their own. By the way, re: the stats, Johnson missed time too.

I'm not saying either one of them is better than Shockey, or that both combined are better than Shockey. I'm just saying it's not like there's a black hole at the position as-is.

"On the other hand, you’re aware that Eric Johnson and Billy Miller combined for more yardage last year than Shockey did, right? And that they accounted for more yardage than Shockey put up in 2006 too? And that they’re not assholes? And that there are two of them, so that if one of them goes down, you still have a tight end not named Ronnie Ghent or Buck Ortega?"

GW, you know I love ya like my dog, but here I think the turbostats finally failed you. IIRC, Shockey was knocked out of the game in week 14 and was done for the season. So, he's missed, what, 2-1/2 games. Maybe if he finished out the season he might have had more yardage than Miller + Cliffs of Dover combined.

Also, there's one thing about him stats don't begin to tell you: Shockey can both catch *and* block well, those two dudes can't. That means when Jeremy is on the field, defenses don't have the luxury of pinning back their ears on one knowing he's no threat on the other.

It's kind of like your excellent point about kickers, actually. Why take extra up roster spots for tight ends because no one can be counted on to do either thing dependably? Wouldn't be worth a little bit more to get a guy who can do both?

When the Saints are in the red zone driving for the winning TD and there's 5 cbs draped on Colston and Meechum, who would you rather force their mlb to cover? Eric "Jacked Up" Johnson? Or that brash badass from the "U"? I'd put my dineros on that kid who called Parcells a fag.

We know Brees and Payton have a way of getting talented te's to play up to their potential. We would be just sick when we had the ball with a bonafide te in the mix...think 2001 Rams or 2007 Pats sick.

That all said, I think the offense will be fine without him and I'd put the odds of getting him at no better than 50-50. It all depends on how big of an asshole he wants to be to Reese and Coughlin. But I'd give up a 2nd round (3rd round if past training camp) pick for him in a heartbeat. Whether Reese would go for that remains to be seen.
